Stonescar Budget Burn for new players- work in progress

Basically, we throw the best burn spells plus efficient Stonescar creatures into a deck.  Because the current meta is aggro-heavy, we run 4X Vara’s Favor.

In the pre-wipe season, Weiseguy piloted a midrange Stonescar Burn to #1 on ladder.  It should be similar to this list plus Bandit Queens (unfortunately Bandit Queen is a legendary now).  Post-wipe, it looks like the meta will be aggro-heavy.  What Weiseguy piloted to #1 last season with a few changes (like Vara’s Favor and Cabal Countess) will likely become the dominant deck and the metagame will warp around it.  Vara’s Favor will be very strong to ok in almost all matchups- aggro decks have lots of 1-drops worth killing.  Rakano has Silverwing Familiar, which is definitely worth killing before the opponent can drop equipment on it.

This blog post will cover a sample deck list + substitutions.

Card Discussion + Substitutions

Cards not in the decklist

Bandit Queen:  Ideally you run 3 of this legendary.  Then you’d pretty much have the Burn Queen list (scroll down to see my edited decklists in that post).

Sabotage:  Running 1 or 2 should be fine.  Almost all of the decks that you face in the meta should have decent targets (except for Combrei, which is spell-light and unit-heavy).

Soulfire Drake:  1X is a decent substitution for reaper.

Blood Beetle:  1 or 2 is ok as substitutions for other 1 drops.

Frontier Jito:  I wouldn’t run him.  Not good against Burn Queen.  Mirrors between Bandit Queen variants will have some level of board stall and 1 power creatures are unlikely to get through.

Ornate Katana:  Adding 1 is ok.

Rakano Outlaw:  Adding 1 is ok.

Shogun’s Sceptre:  Adding 1 or 2 is ok.

Madness:  I don’t think this card is good right now.

Treachery:  Not sure about this card.

Ticking Grenadin: This card is meh.  Works better with Shadowlands Guide (and Ornate Katanas), but Shadownlands Guide isn’t as good as Cabal Countess.

Plague:  This is a dubious tech card against Bandit Queen.  I would not run it because the new Burn Queen variants don’t play Assembly Line.

Seek Power:  Running 1 instead of Kaleb’s Favor would be fine.

Cards in decklist

Oni Ronin:  Not good against Burn Queen or Feln control.  Good against Rakano.  The correct number is likely 1-4.  Cutting them entirely may be fine.

Grenadin Drone:  Mostly a defensive unit against other aggro decks.  The second grenadin drone doesn’t do much, so I wouldn’t run a full playset of this.  Against control, this is a resilient 1 drop that hopefully does 2 damage/turn.

Dark return:  This card is very good.  You generally want to use it to replay your best creature.  However, if the board is clear, you can use it to get a board presence to try to get recurring damage from a unit.  4 may be the optimal number.

Suffocate, Annihilate, Deathstrike:  These are all very good removal spells.  I wouldn’t run more than 1 Deathstrike.  Adding more removal is fine.

Cabal Countess:  2-3 is probably the optimal number.  She is very power intensive so I’m not sure I would want 4 copies.

Impending Doom:  Card is decent, run 3 if you have to.

Umbren Reaper:  Card is decent, run 3 if you have to.

Piloting burn decks in Eternal

Always calculate the points of burn damage that you have in your hand.  Rapid Shot is like burn because you can play it on unblocked attackers.  (However, some decks have fast spells that can kill the unblocked attacker so there is some risk to that plan if the opponent has power open.)  Generally speaking, your lines of play are:

  1. Burn them out.  If you have lethal burn in hand, then usually burning out the opponent will work.  Be careful about the decks that can interact with burn.  Armory decks can equip weapon that essentially “gain” life via armor.  Feln has Backlash, Eilyn’s Favor, and Black Sky Harbinger.  Rakano sometimes runs 1-2 Protects, but I wouldn’t play around that.  Combrei will likely run 4X Combrei Healer, but usually they barf those out onto the board right away so I wouldn’t play around that.
  2. Use burn on blockers and attack with units.
  3. If you can’t get in a good attack, then don’t attack.  Losing a unit to deal 2 damage isn’t a great attack unless it puts the opponent within lethal range.  If you can’t get a good attack in, just wait for a better moment (e.g. you draw combat tricks, Bandit Queen, or removal for their key blocker).
